July 27 – August 01 course on Ancient Greek ceramics
Polytropon Art organizes a five (5) days Ancient Greek Ceramics Course from July 27 to August 01, 2018. The course is open to anyone.
At Polytropon Art, students come into direct contact with clay, learn how to prepare raw materials, how to work a pottery wheel and fashion their own objects.
Students also learn how to illustrate their ceramics and finally experience the firing of a kiln.
This hands-on experience allows participants to better understand and assess both the technique and the artform.

The course program
1st day (Friday)
15:00 – 16:00 Registration at the workshop
17:30 Welcome reception
18:00 – 20:00 Start of the workshop
Presentation of theory, techniques, materials, and color preparation.
2nd day (Saturday)
09:00 First contact with clay. How the wheel works
10:30 Coffee break
11:00 Practice, construction of items of clay on the wheel or moldered clay
14:00 Free for lunch
17:00 – 19:30 Preparation for painting (turning, placing handles)
3rd day (Sunday)
Today we leave our ceramics to dry.
09:00 – 16:00 Excursion to the mountain of Parnassus.
Our mini bus will depart at 09:00 and we will arrive at our starting point for the 30 minute walk to Korykeion Andron cave at 10:00.
For people not willing to walk, the mini bus will continue to the rest area of Paliopanagia.
• visit of the cave Korykeion Andron (a walk of 30 minutes)
• lunch at the rest area of Paliopanagia
• visit of the observatory & return to Delphi
4th day (Monday)
09:00 – 10:30 Polishing the surface of the pottery, applying yellow ocher wash, polishing again.
10:30 Coffee break
11:00 – 13:00 Pottery painting
13:00 – 16:30 Free for Lunch
16:30 – 20:30 Excursion to the sea side (swimming & aperitif)
20:30 Return to Delphi, free for dinner
23:00 – 00:00 Filling the kiln, recitation of the “Kiln” ancient greek poem start firing the kiln (oxidizing conditions).
5th day (Tuesday)
09:00 – 11:00 Visit of the Archaeological site of Delphi
11:30 – 12: 30 Firing under reducing conditions, re oxidization, stopping of the kiln and lettting it cool.
12:30 – 13: 00 aperitif at the yard of Polytropon Art workshop
13:30 Free for lunch
6th day (Wednesday)
09:00 – 11:00 Visit of the Archaeological Museum of Delphi
11:30 – 12: 30 Removing the finished pottery from the kiln polishing and packing the pottery
12:30 “Goodbye” aperitif at the yard of the workshop
